Affinity

  • 2oz Scotch
  • 1oz sweet vermouth
  • 1oz dry vermouth
  • 4 dashes bitters
Stir, strain.


Everything the Adonis pretended to be, the Affinity is. At the risk of chauvinism, this is a Man's Drink. Ron Burgundy would order this. The smokiness of the Scotch gives this a very different character than the Manhattan it resembles, and it just might edge it out on the tasty front. I have to admit that I always thought a Scotch Manhattan was a Rob Roy, but apparently it all depends on the vermouth ratio - I'm looking forward to furthering my education!

  1. I've been slowly trying out every combination of whiskey / sweet vermouth / dry vermouth so I'm sure I've stumbled across this. Seems like it would depend highly on your choice of scotch.

    Also, that seems like too much vermouth to me - I'll try to this to the letter tonight though just to try.

    Favorite recent variant, with hints of this and the Adonis, something along these lines:
    3 pt bourbon
    1 pt sweet
    1 pt dry
    few dashes bitters
    touch of cointreau, say 1/8-1/4 oz?

    Honestly I nail this about one in every 3 times I make it - its a delicate balance. But when it works its my favorite manhattan-shaped drink around, just that little touch of orange slamming into the bitters on a backdrop of smooth is a thing of beauty. Still working on it.
